The Philosophy of Elixa Herbal Teas

The philosophy of Elixa herbal teas is to provide specific health & well being benefits while emphasising aroma, colour, vibrancy and taste, by selecting only the highest quality herbs for its blends.

Elixa herbal teas are not put in tea bags as the herbs would need to be very finely milled and during this process cell structure is shattered and subsequently releases volatile components, which are then lost. Even when premium quality herbs are used in teabags there is a marked loss of flavour. Flavours, preservatives and synthetic essential oils are often added to resotre taste and colour. You will find the taste of Elixa teas far superior. Organically grown herbs support the environment and maintain the purity and integrity of the earth.

The History of Herbal Teas

Herbs date back as the oldest form of traditional medicine in the world. Plant medicines have been in regular use for at least 5,000 years and probably much longer. Egyptian papyri dating back to around 1700 BC record that many common herbs have been used medicinally for at least 4,000 years. Tea has a long history as a health-giving drink.

The Benefits of Herbal Tea

Elixa herbal blends have been specifically tailored as ‘functional blends’. Even the simplest of herbal teas are able to energise, relax, restore, revitalise and assist in improved metabolic functioning. Herbal teas contain antioxidants. Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances in plants, fresh fruit and vegetables and red wine that have the ability to neutralise free radicals to slow down or even reverse the damaging effects of oxidation.

The Art of Making Herbal Tea

1. Always use clean utensils.

2. Use cold, fresh water. Cold water contains an abundance of oxygen, which gives the tea its full flavour. Spring, distilled or filtered water is preferable. The quality of water used will affect the taste of the tea.

3. Do not overfill the strainer. Tea leaves need room to swell in order to give off their flavour.

4. Place 1 teaspoon (approx. 2 grams) per cup of tea in a teapot.

5. Pour water onto the tea the moment just off the boil. Do not allow water to over-boil as the oxygen is boiled off and many of the plant constituents may be lost in the steam.

6. Let the tea stand and draw for approximately 10 minutes.

7. Pour the tea and enjoy the aroma.

8. Herb teas may be enjoyed with a little honey to sweeten.

Storage

It is important to keep your herbs in airtight containers in order to keep their flavour and potency. It is preferable to store the herbs in dark containers as light tends to fade the colour and weaken the aroma and taste. In hot weather the herbal tea may be placed in the refrigerator.

When herb teas are stored carefully, herbs can remain fresh and potent for more than a year.
